St. Francis Shelter is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping families in need. By providing temporary transitional housing, we create an environment that allows clients to pursue certain fundamental life goals, such as housing, employment, education for children and so forth. All families at St. Francis have care of children so we offer families an opportunity to visit the library and enjoy the games, materials and resources available.
Volunteer Case Managers
Hunger and Homelessness
The St. Francis Shelter (11 blocks from campus!) is in need of volunteers to serve as case managers to help support families experiencing homelessness and seeking help with housing, employment, social services, childcare, etc. Translator assistance is available for volunteers who are not bilingual. Time commitment is 4-6 hours per week, with 2 hours done at the shelter on Monday mornings from 9:30 - 12:00. One year commitment is preferred. No experience is necessary - training is provided. Must be 18+ and pass a background check. For more information, please contact Helana at 503-588-0428.
The St. Francis Center is also looking for people who would enjoy working with kids of all ages in a library for 2 hours a week. We have 3 computers, games, arts and crafts, books, movies and provide a snack and juice. Volunteers can help children with homework, play games, read or plan an activity. The shelter has 13 furnished one and two bedroom apartments and a 3 bedroom house. Families with children stay at the shelter for free while developing skills to live independently and find permanent housing. If you are interested they encourage you to come and visit the library. You can email Melodie@wvi.com or call 503-769-5035 if you are interested.
